Do Calming Vests Really Work? - Blye

Do Calming Vests Really Work?

What They Are, and What the Studies Say

Many dogs experience anxiety at some point in their lives. Storms, fireworks, travel, vet visits, changes in routine, or simply being left at home can trigger worry and panic. While every dog shows their stress differently — through whining, pacing, hiding, trembling, or barking — many share one thing in common:

They are searching for comfort.

A calming vest is a simple idea: gentle, even pressure, like a hug. It is designed to help your dog feel calmer, and they can wear it even when you are not right beside them.

At Blye, we took this idea even further.
The Blye Snuggler combines a calming pressure vest with a soft ear hood, built in as one piece. It is designed to help anxious dogs settle.

What the Studies Say About Calming Vests

In a 2014 study of 90 dogs with separation or general anxiety, heart rate fell during a 15-minute kennel test in dogs wearing a snug pressure vest, and rose in dogs without one. Studies are small, and vests don't help every dog.

In a survey of 300 owners who used a pressure vest for fireworks, 44% rated it effective.

The Blye Snuggler wraps gentle, even pressure across the chest and torso. It is designed to help your dog feel calmer.

A Soft Ear Hood, Built In

Many anxious dogs react strongly to sound. Thunder, fireworks, lawnmowers, traffic, or even high-pitched household noises can be startling and difficult for them to process. These moments can quickly escalate into stress or panic.

The Snuggler’s soft ear hood is built in. It sits over the ears and can stay up during storms, fireworks, or noisy travel.

Helping Your Dog Feel Comfortable With Their Snuggler

Give your dog time to get used to the Snuggler. Before putting it on for the first time, take a moment to introduce it gently. Dogs interpret the world primarily through scent, so allowing them to sniff the fabric and explore it naturally builds familiarity and trust.

Place the Snuggler beside your dog during a calm moment and let them investigate without pressure. You might speak softly, offer praise, or simply allow them to rest next to it.

Avoid rushing or forcing it on, slow, gentle introduction helps them understand that the Snuggler is something safe and comforting.

For dogs who are especially scent-driven, you can use the Blye cotton bag provided. Place an old T-shirt or a small item with your natural scent inside the bag for a day or two. The familiar smell will transfer subtly to the Snuggler.

These small steps help your dog link the Snuggler with good things.

When to Use a Calming Vest

A calming vest is made for the moments that stress your dog. Common times include thunderstorms, fireworks, travel, vet visits, grooming appointments, or busy environments. You can also use it at home during time alone, once they rest in it happily with you home, or whenever your dog needs extra reassurance.

Put the Snuggler on before the stressful event begins, once your dog is used to it at home. That way the vest goes with quiet moments, not only with panic.

A Hug They Can Wear

The Blye Snuggler is soft to the touch. Adjustable straps let you set the fit. Snug, not tight. You should be able to slide two fingers under the straps.

The Snuggler is more than a vest.

It is a hug they can wear.

Results vary between dogs. If your dog's fear is severe, talk to your vet.
